THE NEW CHIEF JUSTICE.
Under the heading "Translation of a Leader," the " Evening Post" says: — "From the standpoint of fitness for the high office Sir Robert Stout cannot be regarded as the best man in the colony to be raised to the Chief Justiceship. It is almost an invariable rule, however, that the clearest and most effective advocate has made the ablest Judge. Sir R. Stout's professional career, therefore, indicates that he. should prove a Chief Justice worthy of the best traditions of the British judicature. The Premier, in offering the post to one who lias proved, in his time, the most destructive critic of the present Administration has shown once more a superiority to personal feelings. Whatever his political sins may be, Mr Seddon possesses, in this freedom from personal considerations, one of the highest attributes of statesmanship. Such :in appointment will certainly show the country that he is not the biassed partisan many of Ms actions would lead one to sup- i pose." • . . |
