Jetty yesterday afternoon the steamer Eotorua collided with the end of the pier. One of the girders wa,s smashed, but the steamer sustained no injury. . ;■ The Bteamer Werfa, a vessel cbartpre-1 by the Union Steamship Companyj to temporarily replace the steamer Ohau, arrived in port on Saturday morning from Westport, with a cargo of coal. Altliough. sixteen years old, the Werfa is probably one' of the most up-to-date colliers seen at Lyttelton, so far as facilities for the rapid discharge of coal is concerned. Her deck is a mass of hatchways, while her three masts are provided ■ with derricks, suitable for landing coal under all conditions, the baskets being hove up by the rapid friction winches. The Werfa was built at Newcastle by Painter and Co., in 1883. She is 602 ' tons net register and 918 tons . gross, her dimensions Being 216 ft long, 30ft 2in beam, and 15ft sin depth of hold. She can carry between 1000 and 1100 tons of coal. . Captain Stewart, late chief officer of theEotorua, brought the steamer from Wellington yesterday. Captain Spence will resume command to-day. The schooners Morning Light and Clematis arrived yesterday, timber laden. The Naimshire, one of the new steamers' of the Shire line, arrived* in port yesterday afternoon from Port Chalmers. She is on hey maiden trip, and came to New Zealand' fiom Australia. She is similar in design lothe other steamers of the Shire line, and is 1 in command of Captain Wallace) late of the steamer Perthshire. Captain Wallace took charge of the steamer in, -England, his place on board the Perthshire being taken by another Captain Wallace. Mr Forder^ la'e of the Perthshire, is chief officer, Mr Bnrrowman being sdcond, Mr Dickenson third and 1 Mr Duncan fourth. Mr Fawdin is chief entrineer, with Mr Humbert second, h.i Yo*uig third, and Mr Robertson fourth. ' : . :
