TEMPERANCE REFORM
; TO THE EDITOB. Sir, — That is a splendid temperance sermon by the Rev Canon Ellison, M.A., published in your paper on Saturday, May 27. I think it ought to be sown broadcast over the land. Still I think it does not go far enough. If we are to conquer the drink evil, we must be out-and-outers. To my fancy modern society is like a leaky ship. Good men and women are doing their best .to keep her afloat, baling out the water while multitudes are sneering at them instead of lending a helping hand. Mrs Blake and others of that sorfc have got a bit of wire netting or perforated zinc, and they insist on covering the hole with that, while the prohibitionists demand permission to stop the leak with a proper plug and put an end to" the labour of baling and pumping. Now, I say, the former are neither true philanthropists nor patriots, while the latter deserve the credit of both —I am, etc., A.L.O.T.
