THE PERTHSHIRE.
H-.M.S. MILDURA TO GO IN SEARCt
THE DUCKENFIELD'S CRUISE. United Press Association — By Blectrio Telegraph— Copyright. SYDNEY, June 16. The Admiral' 'despatches H.M.S. Mildura from New Zealand to search for the Perthshire. ■' The Duckenfield has returned from an unsuccessml search. After leaving Nelson, she proceeded to Lord Howe Island 1 , and thence zigzagged across to Sydney, keeping a sharp look-out. During the greater part of the trip she experienced very stormy weather, with much rain and mist, and it was impossible to see beyond three miles.
CAPTAIN EDWIN'S OPINION,
[Per Press Association.l AUCKLAND, June 16. The Star of Victoria, from London and Sydney, went northward in search of the Perthshire, but saw nothing of her. She met with a terrible north-east gale, ; and hove to for. eighteen hours off Three Kings. Her deck coal was washed overboard. - WELLINGTON, June 16. Captain Edwin is of opinion that the Perthshire has drifted to the west, and is now probably 300 miles westward of the point where she was last seen, and making in the direction of Lord Howe Island. He bases his belief on a study of the winds prevailing lately. Under ordinary conditions he think? that she would have gone in the direction of the Kermadecs. INVERCARGILL, June 16. The Naimshire, . from Sydney, reports no sign of the Perthshire.
THE WAIKARE'S EXPERIENCES
Captain Richardson, of the Waikare, reports that he interviewed the captain of the Northern Chief in Sydney, and, having got all the information he could, sailed close under Lord Howe Island, thence due east and afterwards south to latitude 34.8, longitude 164, where a heavy north-east gale put an end to the search. A dangerous sea was soon running, and the steamer needed all attention herself. This lasted till land was sighted. Whatever may have been the Perthshire's position on the 9th, Captain Richardson thinks that if she has undergone similar experience to the Waikare she has drifted fully 150 to 200 miles south to south-west, and he believes that the gale is still raging. At one time the Waikare had to be put head on to the sea-, and the engines were slowed down.
