A Serious Charge. — John Munro, an eDderly man, was charged, on the information of Christopher Richard Wilson, with having, on June 1, at Sumner, threatened to shoot his wife and child, and burn down the house of the informant. The evidence was to the effect that Mrs Munro had been nursing Mrs Wilson through an illness, and on Thursday afternoon the accused came to the house, under the influence of liquor. He did not effect an entrance, and soon went away. He returned in the evening, and, thumping heavily on the door, demanded admittance. He was mad with, drink, and threatened that if his wife did not immediately come out he would shoot her and the child, and burn tie house over her head. Wilson, failing to pacify him at the time, went out tor the road and remonstrated with the cabman for bringing the man in such a state. He was afterwards got away, but not before he had thoroughly terrified his wife. In defence, the accused said that as far as. he could remember it was utterly untrue that he had threatened his wile. He had not had a firearm of any kind in his possession for 1 at least three years, and the • statement that he had threatened to born ■ down the house was without truth. At 1 least it was so far as he couia remember. Mr Wilson said he had no wish to press the charge. The accused was a thorough gentleman, when he was sober, and he only wanted him to understand that he was not to be allowed to go on as he liked when he got drunk. Mrs Munro said she wished to apply for a prohibition order against her hxEsband. His Worship bound the acensed over in one surety of £10 to keep the peace for one month, in default fourteen days' imprisonment. ' The accused opposed the application for a prohibition order, so the hearing was adjourned till Tuesday-next.
