The boundless enthusiasm displayed in Paris towards Major Marchand resembled the demonstration on the occasion of the Czar's reception. The ladies almost smothered Major Marchand with flowers, and the crowd hailed him as the conqueror of Fashoda. M. Lockroy, Minister of Marine, M. Brazza, Governor of the French Congo, and other notabilities, overwhelmed him with congratulations. Major Marchand's attitude was dignified and reserved. He received a sword of honour.' M. Loubet accorded him an interview, and the Chamber of Deputies passed him a vote of thanks.
