ELLESMERE AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL ASSOCIATION.
s ™ - Ilw annual general meeting of the Elles _ mere Agricultural and Pastoral Associate fc was held in the Leeston Hotel on Monday when there was a large attendance o : members, the president, Mr Job Osborn presiding. An apology for absence was re wived from Ali- A. Chamberlain, who de clmed to allow himself to be nominatec a as a committeeman. Five new member! j" were elected. Correspondence was read: . JJi-om the Secretary of the Canterbury Agßi cultural and Pastoral Association, coverint particulars of the allocation of the £2( J prize offered by the Canterbury Agricul tural and Pastoral Association as prize: i m connection with their, winter show'. Fron . the Sydeukam Poultry Association, offerim ; to sell a number of poultry and pigeor ' pens to the Association. It was decidec . to allow the incoming committee to «sc their discretion in the matter. It was ! decided to amend . the general rules tc , permit of new members being admitted at general committee meetings. In pre- . senting the annual report and statement '. of accounts, Mr Osborn &aid that the coming year promised to be more successI fui than any previous year. All 'the out- '\ standing accounte had been paid, and the '■- Association now commenced with a credi. balance. He regretted that it had been necessary to cut down the prizes by 20 per ;. cent in order to attain that position. During liis term of office, the Association had introduced lectures on matters of general agricultural interest, by experts qualified to treat the various subjects, the chief being "Tuberculosis in Cattle," by Mr C. J. Reakes, and "Navicular Diseases of the Horse," by Mr J. C. Charlton. Professor Bayne, Rev H. Ensor and Mr G. C. Waby liad also given addresses on various matters of great interest to 'the agriculturists and flock-owners in the district. Already the results of some of these addresses had proved of great value to stock-owners. He had noticed a matter w r hich he would like to see taken up by an authority — the prevalence of rust on autumn grasses.* This was an evil to which he attributed much of the recent trouble experienced by herd and flock-owners. During his recent visit to Australia, he had made inquiries as to what extent Australian agriculturists and pa.storalistg suffered in this respect, and had learned that rust, either on wheat oi\ grass, was almost a thing of the past in the Echuca and other farming districts, which, in years gone by, were greatly troubled by it- The Ellesmere show had been a great success last year, and ranked second only to the Metropolitan show among Canterbury shows. He then referred to the great amount of secretarial work, and suggested that the amount paid to, the secretary was altogether "inadequate to the ser-;. vices demanded, and recommended a. substantial increase'; either in the form of a bonus, or additional salary. The matter was fully discussed, and a motion was moved by'MrW. F. M. Buckley, and seconded "by- Mr. T. B. Howson, that in addition to the year's salary (£25) and bonus (£5) uaid to the secretary, a further bonus of £1Q should be voted, and that it- should be a recommendation to the incoming committee to consider the question, and put the matter of the . secretary's salary on a more satisfactory footing. This was carried. .'The- election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows:^ — Patron," Mr tr. E. Rhodes (re-eleeted) ; Mr J. Stackhouse ; vice-president, Mr W. F. M.
