THE "CANTERBURY TIMES."
Amongst an interesting collection of pictures in this week's " Canterbury Times " is a series of views of the prosperous North Canterbury town of Amberley. The importance of the district of which that town is the centre may be estimated from i-l the fact that from Amberley railway station during the past year 93,000 sheep iiave been despatched, which is believed to be e the largest number forwarded from any railway station in the colony. A picture which will be greatly appreciated is a splendid likeness of Mr J. A. Buckland's wonderful "pacing" colt Valiant, winner of the Canterbury Trotting Club's Juvenile Stakes last week, with his trainer and driver, Mr C. Piper. New Zealand has still to give way to Australian-bred horses .. on the trotting track, but in another . sphere, she is unapproached, as witness the lambs bred and fattened by Mr P. Clinton, at Darfield, and sold at i Addington r a fortnight ago at 20s each, and of which e alive and dead, photographs are repro^ - duced. A glance at this pair of pictures t will show what "Prime Canterbury" is. f Portraits of representatives of the five great Powers of the Peace Congress, a 3 picture of the missing steamship. Ohau, . a view of the scene of the forthcoming 5 sheep-dog trials on the Port Hills, and a * number of other portraits and views com- ' plete this admirable feature of the paper. . The number also contains an abundant and J excellent supply of fiction, including, beJ sides the serial, "If Sinners Entice Thee,'' 5 .several complete short stories by the most ' populai- writers of the day. A " True Tale iof the Buccaneers,", narrating. the history, of Captain Roberts and his demon crew, the story of " The Finding of Fiery Creek " . (" Goldseekers of the Fifties"), one of the series of "Flying Thoughts" (by Mrs Meander"), a description of "Operation Day at the London Hospital," a statement of the position of the Midland Railday debenture-holders, and several shorter articles on various subjects are amongst the other literary contents. Thare is. a full account of the doings at Cheviot last ; week, and an ample budget of agricultural, i sporting and other news. Indeed, all classes of readers are eatered for in this popular weekly.
