MEETINGS OF SOCIETIES.
At the monthly meeting of the Ashley Masonic Lodge, Rangiora, on Thursday night Bro W. Allan, Senior Warden, was elected Worshipful Masster for the ensuing year, and Bro G. F. Smith, P.M., was ' re-elected treasurer, for the third time. It was decided that the installation of the Master Elect should take place on the date'of :the next regular meeting, and that the! ceremony should be followed by a banraiot. A meeting of the Christchurch. Prohibition League was held at the rooms of the Young Men's Christian Association last evening. Mr G. J. Smith, M.H.R., was inthe chair/ and there was a good attendance of members. Arrangements were. made, for an open-air meeting, to be held in Cathedral Square to-night, and -it was decided to hold a social gathering in each month, the first to take place on Friday evening next. A report was received from the delegates who had attended the recent Convention at Timaru, and they were' accorded a heiu-iy vote of thanks. It was decided to write to the Secretary of the Palmerstori North Convention, congratulating him pn the fact that there had been so large a number as 332 delegates present, and on the genernl success of the Convention. The Chairman then gave a short address on the need for organisation, in view of the approaching licensing poll,, and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. A meeting of the Independent Liberal and Labour Association was held at Sydenham on Thursday evening. A large number of new members were- elected. It was decided to invite Mr. John Hutcheson, M.H.R. for Wellington, to give an address in Christchurch in the interests of the Association. A quantity ,of routine business was transacted. A meeting ' of the Papanui Mutual Improvement Society was held on, Monday evening. . The resignations of Miss Bishop .and Mr R, Frees wjere received. . The question box was the, subject. iov . the evening. \ , The .fortnightly meeting of the- momi Rebekah Lodge of Oddfellows was held m " the Orange Hall, "Worcester ...Street, _on Wednesday evening, Sister Smart, N.G., presiding. Three sisters were reported as -being ill, and a- Sick Committee was formed "to visit them. The D:D.G.M. made his first official visit to the Lodge. ' A meeting of the committee of the Christchurch Branch of the Liberal and Labour Federation of New Zealand was held in Hobbs's Buildings last night. A letter was received from- Mr G. W. Russell, stating that he would be glad to comply with the committee's request to deliver a public address under the auspices of the branch. It was decided that Mr Russell should be asked to give the address in the Assembly Rooms, Hobbs's Buildings pn Monday, June 19. A number of leaflets, giving reasons for supporting the Liberal policy were received ; and it was decided to distribute them on the occasions of Mr Russell's address. Some candidates for membership were elected. It was Agreed to. hold a general meeting of the Branch on Friday next.
