i THE ANNUAL VOLLEY FIRING. [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, May 27. The result of the annual volley firing by the Volunteers is announced. One hundred corps (4814 men) fired, and the average figure of merit was 11.85 points. In the year 1897-98 the total number of men who fired was 4002, and the average figure of merit was 12.21 points last year. _The twenty corps which came first in order of merit and their averages were as follow : — Wanganui Rifles 54 men, average 23.62 points. Timaru Port Guards, 48 men, 19.25 points. Timaru Rifles, 53 men, 19.14 points. Timaru City Rifles, 53 men, 18.58 points. North Otago Mounted Rifles, 39 men, 18.28 points. Kaiapoi Rifles 52 men, 17.75 points. Stoke Rifles, 34 men, 17.69 points. Waimea Rifles, 58 men, 17.40 points. Canterbury Engineers, 52 men, 16.88 points. Kaitangata, Rifles, 49 men, 16.51 points. Hastings Rifles, 33 men, 16.02 points. Waimate Rifles, 54 men, 15.94 points. Blenheim Rifles, 44 men, 15.84 points. First Westland Rifles, 53 men, 15.71 points. Dunedin Engineers, 64 men, 15.23 points. Totara Rifles, 31 men, 14.87 points. Manawatu Mounted Rifles, 36 men, 14.72 points. Wellington City Rifles, 59 men, 14.69 points. Dunedin City Guards, 59 men, 14.57 points. Coromandol Rifles, 51 men, 14.35 points.
