CANTERBURY HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

A meeting of the committee of the Canterbury Horticultural Society was held last evening; present — Dr Levinge (chairman), Messrs R. Nairn, J. G. Mitchinson, J. Guntrip, A. E. Lowe and T. Allen. A letter was read from Mr T. E. West resigning his position on the committee, us he was leaving Christchurch. The Secretary was instructed to express to Mr West the committee's regret at losing his assistance. Messrs R. H. Rhodes. v Cockayne and C. A. C. Hardy attended as representing the Council. Mr Rhodes said one of the questions they wished to discuss was the holding of a show, and another the. pruning demonstration which Mrßlackmore had been asked to give. The members of .the Council thought that if a fruit show were held and arrangements made for Mr Blackmore to give a lecture at about the same time this would prove a good advertisement. Mr Cockayne said that they had promises of exhibits, and the Agricultural and Pastoral Association's rooms would be too small. It kad been proposed at first to hold a general show, and to offer prizes, but they had found that their financial position would not allow it, and the suggestion was that they should hold in the Art Gallery an exhibition which would be on a somewhat larger scale than their ordinary monthly shows. The Secretary reported that she had written to the Secretary of Agriculture stating that the Council wished the fruit show to be held before the -eind of May, and.asking whether Mr Bkekmore could be present: She had not .yet received a reply. It was decided to telegraph to Mr Ritchis asking what day this month would be convenient ■ for Mr Blackmore to come to Christchurch to give the pruning demons'ration, adding that if Mr TJlackmoro ccmld not attend, the Society would be glad if arrangements could be ' made for Mr Fitch to take his place. After some discussion it was. decided, on the motion of M" MUchin^n. seconded by Mr. Allen, to i find. an 'pxhiW + lon;of fruit on th». day fol-. lowintr the demonstration of pruning at TChnwbod. ■ It was '-'deciacu..' that members should- be admitted free to; both' the demons .s*ratinn ard the cxk'L'tJon, and receive al"~ t w v fic 7 -e*-<3 for distribution, /o'.hers to b<? chared sixpence. • : .
