THE VOLUNTEERS.
The weekly parade of the Lyttelton Naval : Artillery took place on Monday evening; There were forty of all ranks present, under Lieutenant Commander Joyce. Gunnery sectiens were taken by Corporal Knight and Bombardier Moir, and at the conclusion- of the instruction gunnery certificates and badges, carrying with /them a personal payment of 20s, were awarded to those gunners who had qualified. The annual smoke concert of the li Battery. w,as hel4 last nMjt, when there w;is a good attendance, Captain. Donald being in the cliair. Among the volunteer visitors were Major Wolfe, V.D., Lieutenant Commander Joyce (Lyttelton Navals), Captain N. L, D. Smith (Christ's College Rifles), Captain Dougall (Engineers), and others. The Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry. and-Mounted ,'_ Rifles were also represented, while Bombar- ■-' dier Colemari, of the district staff, was a gußSt. Apologies for absence were received from Captain Snow, ex-Lieutenant Harris, and Air A. E. G. Rhodes. During the. evening Lieutenant Treleaven presented the "Martin Cup," founded by ex-Captain J. C. Martin in 1886, to Corporal Kinge ; and a trophy for the most improved word of command to Gunner Wilson. The toast list was as follows: — "The Queen," proposed by tfce Chairman; "Lieutenant-Colonel Gordon and District, Staff," proposed by the Chairn an, and responded to by Bombardier Coleman ; " The Ordnance Corps," proposed by Lieutenant Treleaven, and responded to by Lieutenant-Commander Joyce and Cap- ■ tain Dougall ; " The Infantry Battalion," proposed by Lieutenant Lewin, »md responded to "by Captain N. L. D. Smith ; "The Life and Honorary Members," proposed by Lieutenant Maude, and responded to by Major Wolfe, ex-Ranger Harrop, and ex-Gunner G. R. Hart; "The Mounted Branch " proposed by Captain Donald, and responded to by Sergeant-Ma jor Berland ; and "The E Battery," proposed by exLieutenant Allison and responded to by Captain Donald. During the evening songs were sung by Honorary Member Collins, Gunner Voyce, Gunner Roberts, Sergeant Hartland, Gunner H. S. Wilson, Bombardiers Coleman and Bradley, Gunner Turvey and Honorary Member rhillips. Recitations' were given by Lieutenant Lewin and Gunner Wilson, and a violin sold by Gunner Oppenheim There will be a special parade of the Queen's Cadets at 7.30 p.m. to-morrow.
