THE PERTHSHIRE.
■ ■ ♦ — '• [Per Pkess Association.] •■-■ : :■"..: AUCKLAND,- May 16! The Elingamitej which' left for Sydney". last night, has been instructed to keep n look-out for the Perthshire. ' CAPTAIN' HAMON'S VIEWS. ; Captain Hamon, of the Waimate, inj' terviewed in Auckland, considered it probable, that the Perthshire is dis-' I abled, either by the loss of her propeller,* or by having the blades stripped. If the, main shaft were broken, the damage could be repaired in a few hours by means, of a .patent belting carried by most oceangoers, unless the break were close to the boss of the propeller. ' If the engines were disabled, enough sail couM be set to give the vessel a speed of about four knots' per hour when running before a good breeze. Besides the square sails on the foremast. and the fore and main staysail*, additional sail, area could be obtained by utilising the derricks and awnings. This would be more than sufficient to give the vessel steerage way, but ib might not sufiice to prevent her being carried on shore by currents or by unfavourable winds. The Perthshire, .and' all the Shire h'ners, are amply provided with boats, and with all necessaries, and are well found in every detail.
