Heavy rain fell duiing Sunday night, and this morning the wicket was soaked, and play was postponed for some time. Later the sun came out. The attendance was large. Johns, Layer and Jones stood out of the •Australian team. The Surrey captain w r on the toss, and sent Abel and Brockwelli in. The first wicket fell for 39 runs, and the score at the luncheon adjournment stood at two wickets for 59 runs. Howell relieved Noble at 39, Abel falling a victim to his first ball. Fifty runs had been added in forty minutes. Hayes was soon beaten by Howell, but the uall missed the wickets. Then he was^ clean bowled. After the luncheon, Howell and Trumble took up the bowling, and Jephson was dismissed by an easy catch at short-leg. The third wicket fell for 80, the fourth for 81, the fifth for 99, and the sixth for 107. The bowlefs : kept an excellent length, and the fiel'dingwas smart. ; SYDNEY, May 16.
