The - fortnightly meeting of . -the Lytteitoh Borough' Council was held on-Mon-pday night ; present— The Mayor ' (Air W: Radcliffe), and Councillors Grubb, Brown, Webb, ' Field,, Smithy. Correspondence was read" : from the Fire ' Brigade; enclosing the list, of members who.had earned service bars, etc. Referred to the Fire Prevention Committee with power to act. The Rev'Father>Salvador and others wrote asking for "the erection" of a lamp-post close to the approach* to the Catholic Church. Referred to the Lighting Committee. Two complaints of damage from storm water during the recent heavy rains were referred to the Works Committee' with power to act. The Water Supply Committee reported that an accident had happened to one of the pumps at the station. The necessary repairs were being effected. The committee was requested to report at the next meeting on the subject \of an increase of salary to the engineer at the pumping station, several of the councillors pointing out that although the work and responsibilities had greatly increased the engineer's services had not been proportionately compensated for. The committee submitted a report on the sinkiDg of the 3in well, water having been struck at a depth of Sl9ft. It was decided to leave the matter of conveyin g the water to the pumps in the hands of the committee with full power to act. The Estates Committee recommended that the cricket, football and. hockey clubs be invited to nominate one representative each to act with the Estates Committee in conti-olling the recreation ground. \ The report alsq recommended that Mr E. Queree's application to be released from his lease be acceded to, provided the arrears be at once paid. The report, which dealt with a number of minor matters, was adopted. The Special Committee on electric lighting submitted a proaress report, which was received. The Finance Committee reported receipts £276 18s sd, and recommended payments amountinc to £167 4s 3d. ;The overdraft stood at £840 14s 2d. Reference was made to the unsatisfactory state of .the road'lendine: to the Public Cemetery, arid the Works Committee .was instructed to at biice proceed with metalling this, and other, roads in the outer portion of the town. .The committee was also rattiest ed to ascertain the cost of £ stope cmshing plant. A few other matter! of aptail were disposed of and the meeting closed.
