Jordan, • the champion j 'draughts player of the world, arrived from the south by the express on Saturday night, and was met and welcomed by several local players. Arrangements have been made for Mr Jordan to play games in Christchurch, and he will be at the Grain Agency Buildings this afternoon for that purpose. He will probably leave Christchurch at the end of /this week. Mr Jordan was born in Edinburgh in lb/2, and has been playing draughts since he was fifteen. He won the Edinburgh championship in .890, and the WylTie "Handicap in 1891. »When the "Herd Laddie visited Edinburgh after -liis Australian tour Mr Jordan played two games with him, both being drawn. He was then nineteen years of age, and he showed such promise that a purse of £10 was subscribed for a match, of twenty 'games between the young player, and Wyllie. The result was a win forj Jordan by tw;o games to one :and seven- j teen draws. In 1893 Jordan, in the first ■ Scottish championship tournament, was ' defeated by Stewart by the narrow score of two wins to cne and nine draws. He shortly afterwards challenged Stewart to a.' match of twenty games, which resulted in a brilliant victory for Jordan by four to nothing . and thirteen draws. He afterwards met and defeated J. C. Brown, the Border champion, and B.
