FASHIONABLE HAIRDRESSING.

There is not the slightest doubt that tha formal lines of hair waving are not considered very good style. The hair is waved in order to lighten it, so that by a touch of the hand or the use of combs it can be made to stand out at the side or at the back. Many of the beauties of the day still keep to the somewhat bushy fringe, and only a few, and these are generally the American contingent, part the hair down the centre. Turned-back fringes are the order of the day, with a few soft curls >>n the forehead elongating into a deep point in front. The arrangement of this pointed curl in front needs some little skill, but any number of pretty women in London are adopting this style. For the evening it is only exceptional that tihe hair is dressed low in England at present, but this is the style of the future, and many of the smart women who herald the modes have been wearing it low in the neck as though in a, net, and ere long jewelled nets will be coming back again, but at present one or two upstanding loops support the diamond ornaments or light aigrettes, which are universally worn. In the country houses people dress the hair in high knots for the evening, and reverse them, and bring them down low for the day beneath the hats. A simple instruction to those who wish to dress then- own hair is to gather the tresses up on the crown, and tie ; then comb the front hair back, and secure it as it should go with invisible hairpins and a.n invisible net. If the hair is abundant, divide it into as many strands as are wanted, and twist these into the fignre 8 ;. if not, a coil of hair must.be added. Those who do not care for the turned-back fringe, divide the short hair horizontally down the centre, let a few soft curls turn downwards over the forehead, and some sausage curls are reversed, but they must be very small and close. There is every kind of invention for colouring, the hair any shade that is needed, permanently or for a time, but as the tresses, must grow, and will grow their natural colour, any arrangement of that kind has to be from time to time supplemented at the roots. A vast number of transformation headresses are worn, which, being translated into the vernacular, means an entire wig ,that completely hides the wearer's hair. Some of these are very prettily arranged, for evening with p. group of, soft curls standing well up at the back of the head. The Empire combs have found such-, universal favour because they, make the hair at the nape of the neck stand out well and support the loops at the' top. A- few pretty women are wearing the hair

parted at tho side, but this only suits .certain people, and for this style the side curls arc useful attached to a comb, and intended tn rest en the* .temples- where the hair has .become, thin. It is no. vis writing against the dictated of "fashion, but, without 'iioiibt, the perpetual use- of 'hot iron is irtost detrimental to the hair, and the same results, with more trouble, can be produced by the many ingenious curling and waring piu3 that have been brought out for the purpose.
