The Duke of Devonshire, in the course of a speech, said that a crisis in China was probably inevitable, and not very far distant. The English 'railway companies and the owners of Atlantic steamship lines are investigating the Marconi system of wireless telegraphy. i President M'Kinley does not intend to call for more volunteers for service in the Philippines, but will send reinforcements from the regular army. Negro rioting in; Guadeloupe, West Indies, has resulted in the burning of five hundred houses and the loss of thirty-one liveg in the conflagration. Much doubt exists in London as to the working of the new stamp duties. Bankers and brokers, however, consider that they will no*, affect the colonies very much. The Hon W. P. Reeves's fascinating book on New Zealand, "The Long White Cloud," is to form the subject of a profusely illustrated lecture by Mr W. W. Collins on Sunday night, at the Theatre Royal.
