LOCAL AND GENERAL.

m There is an addition to the already large potatoes on exhibition in the window of ilie Commercial Restaurant of two others, their respective weights being 31b Boz and 31b 6oz. They were grown in. the garden of one of the Islington employees, on the riverbed. These are the "boss" weights of the reason. Mr James George, who left Christojiarch on Saturday for Aatal, in the interests of ilie Christchurch Meat Company, took., with other produce, samples of the new potato Eclipse, grown_nt the trial grounds at Islington. It is a potato of the kidney variety, pinkish in co-lour, white, firm end floury when cooked, excellent in flavour, a fine cropper and a good keeper. A special meeting of the City Council tfas held at noon to-day, for the purpose of confirming a by-law consolidating and amending the existing by-laws. There were present — the Mayor and Councillors C M. Gray, A. Appleby, J. Hamilton, J. Stapleton, *R. Kincaid, W. Prudhoe, G. Pa-vling and J. T. Smith. On the motion of 'Councillor Appleby, seconded by Coun- " cillor "Smith, the by-law 9 were confirmed. In speaking last night on the question , of a central yard, his Worship the Mayor pointed out that it was a question for the Council to decide whether they would go at once to the ratepayers for a small loan of, say £30,000, for this and other small works, includvnsj the payment of the overdraft, or whether they w»uld wait for the larger scheme, which would supply a water scheme, electricity, etc., and which would require a larger sum of money. 1 At the meeting of the St Albans Borough Council last night an application was made, on. belialf of Mrs Saber, for assistance towards the erection of a fence on the Carl-, ton Mill Road. It was urged that, as the Council bad apportioned the cost of a fence enclosing the old mill site, the applicant should be similarly treated. It was speedily explained, however, that tlie cases *were on widely different bases. The old mill-race was given to the Coxincil, and in making the C)ft it was expressly stipulated that the Council should erect a sufficient legal fence. The new by-law that has just been passed b^ T Ibfl City Council, in addition to consolidating and amending several of the previous existing by-laws, deals with repairs to buildings in the inner area, crossings over footpaths, restricts the use of certain fuel except in chimneys special'v constructed for th* purpose, deals with the use of the public squares, betting in the streets or public places, circus licenses and th° cancellation of lic?nses. One facetious Councillor suggested that the Town Cle7k should send a copy of the by-laws to the editors of the local papers, in order to prevent nonsense on the matter of the Council's by-laws appearing in theii" columns.
