m+. — SYDENHAM. J A meeting of the Sydenham Borough Council was held last evening ; present— lhe Mayor (Mr J. Hadfield) and Councillors Murray, Hallev, Taylor, Young, Sim, Day Jacques, Manhirc and Meikleham. Leave ot absence was granted to Councillors Latferty and Bell. A letter was read from the Government stating its intention to bring into operation Section 5 of the Dairy Industry Act wliich deals with the inspection of dairies and cows from irhicb. the public milk supply is drawn, and to provide for such inspection by competent veterinarians, lhe letter was received. The Progressive Liberal Association wrote suggesting that the Council should imitate the example of the Lyttelton local authorities in sending officials round to enrol persons under the Municipal franchise Act. The letter was received. Messrs Acton-Adams and Kippenbergar, solicitors, wrote stating that as Edward Harper had lost Ms life through the negligence of the Council's contractors, they were instructed by Mrs Harper, the mother of the deceased, to claim the sum of £500 damages in compensation for her son's deatli because of such negligence. If the borough's legal liability was acquitted, they would be prepared to submit the matter'to arbitration. The Council resolved to reply that it did not acknowledge any liability in connection witli the occurrence. It was decided- to approach the Government in tho matter of liaving representatives from each of the local bodies appointed to tlie Board of Control of the Burwood Cemetery. In connection with an application for a tiamway license, it was resolved that ths Council's by-laws provided a fee for each car of £1, and tho Coimcil could not see its way to depart from the by-law. The Bylaws Committor? reported that it had granted all licenses fer kerosene, hawkers and weighbridge. The attention of the trustees of the Selwyn Street School had been drawn to the fact that tho schoolroom had been used for flower shows without being licensed, and they had been informed that the Council intended to take legal proceedings if a license was not applied for before next meeting. The committee proposed to draft amend ments of the Borough by-laws to exempt various outbuildings not exceeding 80ft cf floor space from payment of license fees ; also to provide for the better inspection of chimneys and footings of walls, and to amend the by-laws relating to the construction of brick or stone walls and chimneys. The report was adopted. /The Works Committee recommended that tenders 'for the supply of gravel at 2s 6d per yard should be accepted j also that tlie request of the residents of Walpolc Street for a lamp opposite Goldsmith Street should be granted. A deputation from the proposed Sydenham Bowling Club had approached the committee with a request that a site for a bowling green forty yards square should be sot apart for bowling at the Waltham end of Sydenham Park. Tho committee recommended that the application should be granted, the Works Committee to arrange with the Bowling Ulub as to the exact position of the green. Tho report was adopted. The Finance Committee reported the receipts during the past fortnight to have been £415 6s 6d, and recommended payment of accounts amounting to £145 19s 9d. The balances of accounts, exclusive of interest not ascertained, were as follow: — Credit'! — Separate trust account £19 6s 3d, interest account £612 5s 7d, loan recount £4725 7s 8d;. total £5356 19s lid. Debit— General account £3067 15s lOd. Tiie report was adopted and the Council rose.
