LAWN TENNIS.

The formal opening of the new courts of the Avonside Tennis Club took place' yesterday. There was a large attendance in the morning, including representatives from most of the other tennis clubs in the district. The opening ceremony was performed by Mr A. Marshall, the -president; and play was' then indulged in, a number of scratch games being played during the day. The club has only been in existence some four months, and already possesses about one hundred and forty members. The ground is a most suitable one, comprising an acre on the north side of the river next to the Avon Rowing Club sheds. It has been laid off in terraces, two courts being on the upper and two on the lower, and it is intended to lay down two more courts and to build a pavilion. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the ladies.
