METEOROLOGICAL.
SATURDAY'S WEATHER. From Observations Taken at 9 a.m. The barometer ranged from 29.92 at Russell to 29.41 at Invercargill, and. the thermometer from 72 in the north to 60 in the south. Northerly winds prevailed, but though in the North Island the sky was overcast or cloudy at most places, no rain was reported. There was a heavy sea at Russell, increasing at New Plymouth, moderate to smooth, elsewhere. The Hokitika River wjas in' high flood, and the Bealey Raver famng.
" Why, sir," said the geologist, " the ground you walk on was once under water." " Well," replied the friend, who is nothing if not patriotic, "it simply goes to show you can't hold America down."
