The return match, Chrietchurch v. Merivale, was played at Hagley Park south on Saturday afternoon, and resulted in a win for the Christchurch team by four goals to three. Mr B Lane was umpire, and the game was fast throughout. The teams were: — Cbristchurch (white) — J. Hall (4) K. Heaton Khodes (3), Dr W. Fox (2) and T. L. Cowli3haw (1) ; Merivale (red) — A E. G-. Rhodes (4), G. Gould (3). W. h! Woodroffe (2) and C. M. Turrell (1). The game was played in three spells of fifteen minutes each. From the hit off Woodroffe made a good run, taking the ball into the Christchurch quarters, where it remained for some time, Gould placing a goal. From the next strike off Fox made a bri'liant run from one end of the ground to the other, but hit wide of the goal. After some stiff play Hall saved his goal from danger by a dashing back- stroke;, and a similar hit by A. E. G. Rhedes was made at a ciitical moment for Merivale From a fast dash by the Whites R. H. Rhodes scored a goal, and the spell ended with a rush headed by Hall and Fox, the latter scoring. The second spell was opened by a good run by Cowlisbaw, who, failed to get through, and after fast and even work by both teams A. E. G. Rhodes placed one for the Reds. Hall saved his goal by a good stroke, being hardly pressed at the time by the Reds, for whom G. Gould shortly afterwards scored. The Reds had all the best of the next bit of play until R. H. Rhodes, stopping a dangerous rush, got possession of the ball and took it into his adversaries' quarters. Determined play by Christchurch followed, resulting in a goal hit by R. H. Rhodes A hard gallop between Fox and Woodroffe left the ball in the Whites' territory at the call of time. The third spell opened fast, and; the ball was taken from one end of, the ground. to the other in rapid succession. Good work by Hall and R.. H. Rhodes met an immediate response from A. E. G. Rhodes and Gould, and iii the last five minutes Cowlishaw scored, thus winning the game for the Whites by one goal. Instead of the usual fourth spell, a scratch game between picked sides was played.
