ENTERTAINMENTS.
A coacert in aid of the W^oodend Distxici School Treat Fund was held in the Odd fellows' Hall on Thursday .evening. Mr D C. ShUton, chairman of the committee, pro sided, and there was a large -attendance The Chairman read a letter from Mr J. A Hansman on behalf of the subscribers tt the Lagoon Defence Fund, enclosing { cheque for £5 ;towards t!he tsreat fumd Tlm programme, provided by friends fnom Kaia poi, included instrumental selections, songs recitations, duets, quartettes and grama phone selections. The following were th< performers: — Mesdames Burrows and Ar mitage, Misses Fairelough, Blackwell am ffdhnston, Messrs W. Blackwell, C. Parn haan, F. Burrows, J. Johnson, Coe and th« Ellen family. A comedietta by the eompam was well rendered, the several parts beins creditably sustained by Mrs Armitafie Misses Johnson and Lefthhead, Messrs Vat» ham <3), Johnson and €oe. m The stewards of the R.M.S.S. Ruapelm held a very enjoyable smoke concert at the Royal Hotel, Lyttelton, on Wednesdai evening -An exceUent spread v£ provided by Mr Grantham, the pro l.rietor, and the gathering waS a great success. During the evening musi cal items were contributed by Messrs H Round, G. Cronin, A. England! W Hunn' J, M'MHlan, J. Vits, G. Ashmor^ F Th on "' son, S Kijby, W A. Ellis, J. Lbyd, Mar : den, Wilsden and J. Philpot. Mr f Drh coll occupied the chair, and Messrs Philpot and Lloyd played the accompaniments The Theatre Royal was crowded last ni'^ht on the^occasion of «, concert tendered to°Mi J. A. Gardner, violinist, who is leaving the Pollard Opera Company. The vocal items of .the programme were contributed by leading members of the company and local amateur^ Mr Lenne King, of Wellington, and Mr F Gardner, gave cornet and trombone solos respectively. MrJ. A. Gardner obtained an enthusiastic recall for his fine rendering of Leonard's " Souvenir de Haydn," and gave as an encore. Wieniawski's " Obertass." Later in the evening, Mr Gardner gave " Eirds of the Fore-st," with Raff's " Cavatina," for an encore. The Pollard Opera Company concluded a most successful season in Christchurch on Saturday evening, with the reproduction of "The French Maid." There was a crowded audience, and thb performance was received with marked approval. The company will leave this morning for Dunedin, where it will open on Tuesday night.
