At its meeting last evening, the City Council had atain under consideration the much-discussed question of providing a public morgue. The proposil to erect the building on the Mill Island failed to find any supporters, and, in fact, its author voted for an amendment, although he had pointed out how attractive the building might bo made to look if climbing roses were planted against it. One of the oldest houses in Christchurch, namely, the old brick building opposite the recently removed workshops of Messrs Cunnington and Co., in Gloucester Street, is sit present in process of demolition. This house is more than forty years old, was the first brick structure erected in Christchurch, and was largely used for purposes of meetings in the early days of the city.
