RAILWAY RATES.
Mr Smith received no satisfaction from the Minister of Railways in reference to .the reduction of goods and passenger rates
between Lyttelton and Cnristohui'uii. Mr Cadman asserted that if a reduction in passenger rates was made on one such line, it woiild involve remodelling the suburban rates all over the colony. The present rates to habitual travellers who used season or workmen's tickets, was not high. He did not consider that the freight on this line affected the price of goods in Christchurch. The Department had reduced the rates 10 per cent some time ago, and he felt perfectly safe in saying that not one family leceived auy relief thereby.
With reference to reducing the rates charged for lime used by Freezing Companies, the Minister said that the Companies paid good dividends and did not require such consideration. The Hon W. J. Steward, on behalf of Wai mate fruit-growers, asked for a supply of cool storage vans for strawberries in season; also that "empties" should be returned by the express. Mr Cadman stated that the express was run for passengers, and therefore he could not grant that request. Cool vans would be used where available, but they could not be constructed for the purpose.
