The mail which airived last week brought details of English cricket up to and including August 12.
Gloucestershire made a gallant up-hill fight against Lancashire en July 28, 29 and 30, but were beaten by 66 runs. Scores — Lancashire 148 and 273, (Ward 34 and 18, Tyklesley 72 uud 14, F. Sugg 15, and 45, Baker 0 and 51. Bri'ggs 1 and 47), Gloucestershire 44 and 311 (Rice 0 ard 59, Champain 4 and 113 not out, Bo»rd 0 and 43). In the first innings of" Gloucestershire Mold took six wickets for 22 and Cuttel four for 18, and in, the second innings CittteTscGin?ed e : ght for 105. In. Lancashire's first, innings Jessop secured eight wickets at a, cost of 54 runs.
The match between. Yorkshire and Derbyshire, played on July 28 and following days, was drawn. Scores— Yorkshire 25.2 and 321 for nine /wickets, innings declared closad (Tunnicliffe 7 and-. 8;4, Jtiekson 25 .and- 39, Dtnton 50 j;nd 14, Wainwright 4 and 48, Lord Hawke 49 and 4, Rhodes 0 and 67 not out, Haigh 60 not out and 14), ' Derbyshire 238 and 219 for three wickets (Evershed 8 and 4-1, Wright 15 and 33, Bagshaw 68 and 100 not out, Storer 96 and 30.) . .i., Hastings on July 28, 29 and 30. Kent defeated Sus;ex by an innings and 84 runs. Scores— Kent 377 (Burnup 54, Mason 113, Rashleigh, 105. Pannon 31), Sussex 144 and 139 (Fry 23 and 52, Killick 36 and 0, Butt 24 not out and 15). In the first innings of ! Sussex A. Hearne captured five wickets for 23 runs. Sussex were without Brann, Newham and Montezuma.
On August 1, 2 and 3, Sussex and Gloucestershire drew. The former, who had a weak team, scored 364 and 20 for no wickets, while Gloucestershire made 244 and 341 for eight wickets (innings declared closed). For Sussex, Fry made 93 and 6 (not out), Murdoch 60 and 10 (not out), and Marlow 77, while the principal run-getters for Gloucester were Grace 14 and 93 (not out), Townsend 4 and 33, Sewell 22 and 67, Rice 61 and 63, and Board 47 (not out) and 26. Thanks to a magnificent innings b^ W. Gunn, Notts managed to avert what appeared at one time to be a certain defeat, by Surrey, on August 1, 2 and 3. Scores — Surrey 329 (Abel 28, Brockwell 71, Holland 46, Lockwood 74, Jephson 54) ; Notts 157 and 548 for nine wickets (Dench 4" and 49, J. Gunn 14 and 47, Shrewsbury 30 and 1, W. Gunn 4 and 236 not out, Jones 16 and 52, Guttridge 43 not out and 79). In the first innings of Notts Lockwood took five wickets for 51. The match was drawn.
Warwickshire played, an unexpected draw with Yorkshire on August 1 and the two following days. Scores — Warwickshire 406 and 102 for four wickets (W. G. Quaife 157 not out, Kinneir 67) ; Yorkshire 448 (Tunnicliffo 32, Denton 32, Wainwright 92, Lord Hawke 134, Rhodes 34 and Haigh 41). In f|pite of a brilliant innings by Palairet of 14, and another by Phillips of 65, Somersetshire were, on August 1, 2, and 3 beaten by ten wickets by Middlesex. Scores : —Somerset 221 and 144 ; Middlesex 354 and 12 for no wickets (Stoddart 51, Ford 47. Wells 101). For Middlesex, A. E. Trott secured six wickets for 82 and five for 78.
When Surrey and Yorkshire met on August 4, 5 and 6, the members of the latter team were very stale, and the southern county won in a decisive manner by an innings' and 272 runs. Scores: — Surrey 536 (Abel 114, Brockwell 93, Lockwood 51, Hayward 46, Jephson 40, Baldwin 24, Key 85. Hayes 20, Wood 20) ; Yorkshire 78 and 186 (Brown 47 and 0, Denton 1 and 29, Wainwright 5 and 31, Hirst 1 and 27, Milligan 4 and°63). For Surrey, Lockwood took in all eleven wickets for 126, and Richardson seven for 100. During the Cheltenham week, Gloucestershire defeated Kent on a wet wicket by 27 runs. Scores: — Gloucestershire 189 and 80 (Townsend 27 and 6, Sewell 0 and 20, Jessop 62 and 24, Board 22 and 4) ; Kent 103 and 139 (Barnup 34 and 66). For Gloucestershire Townsend secured altogether thirteen wickets at a cost of 92. The match between Surrey and Middlesex played on August 8, 9 and 10, resulted in a victory for the latter by 136 runs. Scores : —Middlesex 293, and 212 for three wickets (innings declared closed) (J. Douglas 12 and 112 not out, Warner 79 and 20, Stoddart 62 and 54, R. M. Douglas 30 and 9 not out) • Surrey 218 and 151 (Abel 0 and 75, Hayward 66 and 0, Jephson 38 and 17, Key 41 and 21) Yorkshire gave Lancashire a beating by ten wickets on August 11 and 12. ScoresYorkshire (114 and 63 for no wickets (Brown 22 and 32 not out, Tunnicliffe 30 and 28 not out)- Lancashire 112 and 64 (M'Laren 47 and 2, Ward 30 and l9). The first match of the Canterbury Week, which was commenced on August 1, was between Kent and Lancashire. The game was drawn. Lancashire scored 252 and 324 for four wickets (innings declared closed) (Maclaren 39 and 76, Ward 38 1 and lo, Tyldesley 66 and 127, Sugg 5 and 37, Hartley 18 and 53 not out, Eccles 21 and 27 not out, Cuttei 30? W. B. Stoddart 25) ; Kent 275 and 172 (Bannon 78, Patterson 52 and 10 not out A Hearne 80 and 74 not out, Mason 18 and 76 not out). The second game, between Notts and.Kent, was drawn Scores— Notts 345 and 171 for seven wickets (innings declared closed) (Shrewsbury 24 and 77 not out Jones 23 and 34, W. Gunn 3 and 28, Attewell 44, Dench 39) ; Kent 270 and 98 for three wickets (Burnup 54 and 5 A. Hearne 58 and 34, Mason 11 and 40, Marchant 43). When the last mail left there was no mention of Ranjiteinhji returning to England to play for Stoddart's team against All England. The writer of ' Pavilion Gossip in "Cricket " of August 11 expressed the opinion that " on his present form C. B. Fry is the best batsman in England. In a match played early m August between the Old Shirburnians and Dorsetshire, the former, in slightly more than four hours, scored 511 for tne loss of three wickets. The individual scores were 0, 261, 122 and 110 (not out) and 4 (nob out).
