Before the order of the day was mentioned the Minister of Education said that it was only fitting that- tlio Council should pay what respect it could to the memory of Sir George Grey, and place upon record its appreciation of his services. After briefly eulogising the career of the deceased statesman, both in connection with the Colonies and the Empire, he moved — "That the Legislative Council of New Zealand desires to place on 3 ecord its high appreciation of the distinguished services rendered this empire and <■ >lony by the late Eight Hon Sir George < rrey, and respectfully tenders to his relatives an assurance of ils sympathy with them in their bereavement."
The motion was seconded by the Hon W. M'Cullough, and, after a few sympathetic ■words from the Hon H. Tomoana, was agreed to in silence, and the Council immediately adjourned.
