CYCLING.
THE HILL-CLIMBING COMPETITION. The opening run of the Christchurch Cycling Club was started at two o'clock this afternoon, when some fifty members assembled and made a start for the scene of the hill-climbing- competition at the foot of Djer's PassEoad, Colombo Street South. The procession, marshalled by Mr J. Carl, nnd led by Mr W. Thompson, rode slowly round Cathedral Square before starting for its destination, and was joined at intervals along the road by a large number of cyclists of both, sexes. Crowds of people collected in the Square and at the corners cf the principal streets to watch the progress of the precession. : From two o'clock until three, Colombo Road showed a continuous stream of cyclists and persons in drags, palace cars and other vehicles. Thousands of spectators lined the hills, and there were still numbers on the road.
