After the telegraph office closed consideration of the Estimates in the Colonial Secretary's Department was continued. The Electoral Department vote was dis- \ cussed at some length, but the vote passed • unaltered. At 2.40 Mr Herries moved to report pro-
gress. After a discussion, in the course of which Mr Seddon promised to have the details of the contingencies printed and placed in the hands of members, the motion was negatived by 25 to 16. A lengthy discussion ensued on the vote miscellaneous services £18,753, with respect to the item contingencies £9000, the details of which were read by the Minister in charge. On the item salary of the British Resident at Rarotonga, Mr Seddon intimated that he intended to ask the House to pay Mr Moss, the late Resident, his salary to the end of the present year. On the motion of Mr George Hutchison, the item compilation of the early history of the colony, £150, was reduced by £75. The class was agreed to and progress reported. . The House rose at 4.45 a.m.
