ASSAULT.

A cowardly assault was committed upon Mr J. A. Cassidy, solicitor, of this city, last night. Between 7.30 and eight o'clock Mr Cassidy, wbo was returning from Fendalton on his bicycle, arrived at the Hagley Park gate, dose to the Armagh Street bridge. Four or five loafers were lolling about there, and as Mr Cassidy dismounted from bis bicycle in order to open the gate these men accosted him rudely. One man engaged him in conversation, while another came up from behind and knocked him down with a stick. Mr l Cassidy was half-stunned at the time the cowards left him, but recovering himself, re-mounted his machine and kept two of them in sight until opposite the police station. Thinking he recognised a man who was standing in front of the police station as Detective Marsack, Mr Cassidy called out to him to stop the men at once. The man, however, proved not to belong to the force, and the two men taking alarm made off. Mr Cassidy went at once to Dr Do Renzi, who put three stitches in his ear, which was badly cut. Mr Cassidy is not seriously hurt, but will doubtless be inconvenienced for the next few days. i I
