The Spanish Cape Verde squadron, which was reported to have sailed to the southward, comprised the armoured cruisers Infanta Maria Teresa, Almirante Oquendo and Vizcaya, and the torpedo vessel Christobal Colon. WASHINGTON, May 1. Seven hundred thousand Americans have volunteered their services for the war, including the pugilists Fitzsimmons, Sullivan and Corbett. Congress hos authorised the construction of four monitors and sixteen torpedo-destroyers. LONDON, May 1. Mr Gordon Bennetts' yacht Namcuna has taken refuge at St Tropez, on the coast of Trance, after being, chased by Spanish cruisers.
