PRESENTATIONS.

A very pleasing gathering took place in ! the Council Chamber at Lyttelton on Fri- ' day evening, when H. fiich, the winner of the quarter-mile swimming championship of New Zealand, was presented by the residents of the town with a trophy. Hia ■Worship the Mayor (Mr A. Chalmerg), who made the presentation, 6ongratulated Eich upon his success,' and handed him a silver keyless chronograph, which bore the following inscription:— "Presented to H Eich by residents of Lyttelton in commemoration of his winning the Quartermile Swimming Championship of New Zealand 1898." Mr Eich briefly responded. Mr *W Jacques drew attention to the great boon a swimming bath was to a to Wn , and instanced the case of Sydenham, where a bath had been builta few years ago. After a vote of thanks had been passed to the Mayor, moved by Mr C. Mazey,the proceedings terminated. A very pleasing ceremony took place last night, when the staff of the Manchester Fire Assurance .Company met at the residence of Mr J. B. Baker to wish bon voyage to Mr Trevor H. Foster, who is leaving the Christchurch office to join that of the Manchester at Wellington. During the evening Mr Willcox, on behalf of the staff, presented Mr Foster with a pipe suitably engraved, and referred to the esteem m which he is held, and to the kindly feeling that has always existed amongst the staff.
