PASTEURISED MILK.
THE HOSPITAL BOAED'S,?DECISION,
In reference to the decision of the Chris^hvi^chj Hospital Bqard not to accept a tender for? tne supply of pasteurised; milk to the hospital, it appears that there is no authority for' the statement that the medical advisers of the' Board do not view pasteurised milk with favour. ? Such was, it appears,' the idea formed by the members present at the meeting; of the Board, but it would seem that that impression is erroneous.
Dr Fox, house surgeon of the hospital, stated, in reply to a question from a member of the Lyttelton Times staff, that though he had had a short argumentative conversation on the question of pasteurisation of milk, his opinion as to the contract had never been asked, and he had given no i one authority to say that he did not view the article with favour. As far ' as the I principle of pasteurisation is concerned he quite approves of it. It is essential, however, that the process should be carried out in such a manner as to destroy all pathogenic germs. LV Nedwill, chairman of the honorary visiting .staff, o f. the hospital, stated, that the opinionof the staff as to. the advis-! ableness of using pasteurised milk has' never been asked, and, consequently, never en - Speaking for himself, he con-, sioered i that ... if •paßteutisa3si6n''is Carrie-*!;! out in the way that the name- of the pro-! i ITI °Tf. im P ] y. there are many things 'to be said ia its favour. .i
