JAMESON RAID.

. Mr Chamberlain's reply, dated April 10, 1897, to the. Transvaal's claim for .£1,677,938 3s 3d on account of the Jameson Eaid, has just been published in a State paper. He declined, it appears, to present the .demand for "Moral or intellectual damage "to the company ; and with regard to material damage, asked for the particulars. He was sure this request would promptly be complied with, as it was " apparent," he said, " from the nature of the figures, that the Government of the South African Bepublic had proceeded on very precise data in arriving at the various sums to which they lay claim." This allusion to the three-and-threepence was a palpable hit. "No reply to this despatch is given in the paper, and presumably the next move is still with the Transvaal Government.
