♦ — - — On Monday afternoon. Miss N. Davis, of Ht Albana, was presented by her fellowemployes in the dressmaking department of Messrs Strange and Co. with a silver hot-water kettle and a photo-frame. Mdlle. Hillion, the head of the department, made the presentation in a eulogistic speech, and the recipient suitably responded.

Conciliation Boabd.— -Mr H. J. Beswick having resigned his position as Chairman of the Conciliation Board of Canterbury a meeting of the Board was held to consider the appointment of his successor. As the meeting failed to agree, the question of the appointment of a chairman has been referred to the Government. A Disputed Bid.— When a large line of sheep were being submitted to auction at the Addington yards yesterday by Mr Leicester Matson, they were knocked down ut Cs 3d to a gentleman who disputed the bid. They were again put up arid knocked clown at the same price, when the bid was once more disputed. Once more the auctioneer submitted them to competition with the result that the line chained .hands at 7s per head. ° The Theatre Royal. — To-morrow ni»ht Christchurch theatre-goers will again °re. new the acquaintance of an old friend in the person of Mr Frank Thornton. The popular comedian has just terminated a brilliant season in Dunedin, where the patronage accorded him and his clever company has been very enthusiastic, the local theatre on many occasions not beinolarge enough to accommodate the audience. The management intends giving plenty of variety, for during the twelve nights of the Christchurch season six plays will be produced. The successful farcical comedy, The Strangi Adventures of Miss Brown, which latelj created such interest in Sydney and Mel bourne, will be the opening production t nnd playgoei'3 who wish to witness it initial performance in Christchurch shouli secure their seats at the earliest oppoi .tunity.
