Dick resigned. Sports Privileges. — The privileges foi the St Patrick's Day sports at Timaru wen sold on Saturday, and realised J527 105, nol including the gates. An. excursion trail ■will be run from Christchuroh on SI Patrick's Day. Auction Sale of Furs. — Messrs Tonks Norton and Co. are advertising an im portant auction sale of Tasmanian and Australian fur carriage rugs and ladies apparel. A free exhibition will be given this evening from 7.30 till 9. The sale takes place to-morrow at one o'clock. Mayoral "At Home."— On Wednesday the Mayor and Mrs Louisson will hold an "At Home" at the City Council Chambers, to which a general invitation is extended CO all citizens, who may call at any time between 3 and 6 p.m. The affair will be an undress one. The Mayor and Lady Mayoress will receive their guests in the library, which will be fitted up as a drawing-room, and refreshments will be laid out in the Council Chamber, where a string band will play. Picnic. — An outing was held on Saturday by the employes of Mr W. H. Clark, of Ohofea, who very kindly placed at their .disposal a free train to convey them to Otarama. About 300 in all, employes and their friends, availed themselves of the opportunity, and a very enjoyable day was spent in the bush. A hearty vote of thanks having been accorded to Mr W. H. Clark for his generosity, the party left for borne at 6 p.m., which was reached about 9.15. Drinking Cups Requires. — The Women's Christian Temperance Union has ■Written to the Mayor asking- that drinking cups should be placed at the deep well opposite the Theatre Royal for the benefit of thirsty souls who do not wish to take anything stronger than water. It may be mentioned that several brass cups hare already been 'placed there and hare been fastened to the stand pipe by chains. Not ' content 1 with using them', however; some evil disposed persons have broken the chains and carried them away. A Munificent Gift. — The trustees under the will of the late Mr Hynaan Marks, have presented to the Destitute Patients Fund at the Christchuroh Hospital the sum of .£IOO. This will be a very welcome addition to the funds, ■which are at present in a very low state, and further subscriptions are urgently needed from the public. A great deal of good is done by the committee which has the management of the fund, as during each year a very large number of patients • leave the hospital in an * almost destitute condition, and by money thus found many of them are enabled to get necessaries and homes during their convalescence, whereas if there was no such fund upon which they could rely, many of them would have to start work immediately on their discharge, with- the result that in all probability a large proportion would in a short time again have to become inmates of the hospital. Personal. —Mr Scobia Mackenzie, M.H.R., arrived from Wellington, by the lonic, on Saturday morning. Professor Scott was a passenger for Wellington by .the Manapouri, on Saturday evening. Messrs J. Deans and S. Garforth arrived in town by express from the south on Saturday night. The Eevs W. Baumber, J. T. Pinfold, Mr and Mrs J. B. Sargeant, of New York, en route for Wellington, came iby the same train. A considerable number of the leading swimmers of Christchnrch gathered at the railway station on Saturday night to bid farewell to Messrs Cavil}, Lane and other visitors, who left by steamer for the north. Among the passengers who left for the south by this morning's express were: — Messrs J. C. M'Kerrow, S. Weetman and D. M'Millan, Colonel Pole-Penton (for Oamaru), Mr B. •Pearson (Pnkekohe), Mr John Boss (Sargood, Son and Ewen), and Messrs W. A. Shields. A. S. Patterson, and C. M'Leod, of •the Massey-Harris Company. . Sunday Lecture.— There was a very good attendance at the Lyceum last night, when Mr W. W. Collins lecturad on "Theism: Can a Man by searching find God?" 7 .. SUHNER EeOATTA AND FETE. — Most complete arrangements have been made •for the regatta and fete to. be held at Sttmner on St Patrick's Day. The sports will include sailing, rowing, swimming and irunnirjg races, and amusements of various kinds. ■ . . . -> Gift to the Museum.— The late Mr Herbert Clark, of Papanui, has left his .collection of New Zealand insects to the Christchurch Museum. It consists of over .twelve hundred specimens of all orders of insects, almost all of which were collected in the neighbourhood of Christchurch. They have been mounted with great care, :and only require naming. Mr Clark devoted a great deal of his time for several •year3 to the formation of this collection, .and it will make a valuable • addition to :the New Zealand insects already in the Museum. Morris-Tube SuooTiNa.--On Friday .evening the members of the Christchurch Working Men's Club Rifle Class fired another competition at the 200yds range for prizes presented by Messrs Mason, Struthers and Co., S.
