ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

An accident happened at Tattersall's Horse Bazaar on Saturday afternoon when Mr J. Carlton met with injuries which will confine him to his house for some time. He had just mounted a horse to ride in to the ring when the animal reared up and fell backwards. In falling the weight of its body came on the rider's left leg and pinned him to the ground. When Mr. Carlton was released, Dr Greenwood was called in, and an examination showed that the muscles of Carlton's left leg had been severely bruised and strained. On Saturday morning, at Ashburton, Mr W. Stead, the son of Mr Cf. G-. Stead, of Christchurch, was kicked on the head by his horse. He was attended by Dr Leahy, and no serious consequences were anticipated. At the conclusion of the Dash Handicap at the New Brighton Trotting Club's meeting on Saturday, Constable Stunner, who was on duty there, crossed the course under the impression that all the horses had gone by. Just at the moment, however, Nigger was being driven into the straight, and ran agaiEst the constable, who was knocked down and considerably bruised. He was put into a cab and conveyed home, and Dr Greenwood was called in. The doctor found that though the unfortunate man was badly bruised in the side and on one of his ankles, no bones were broken.
