Deceased visited the colojaies a few years ago. MR JOHN BENNETT. "Mr John Bennett, of Leeston, who died on Wednesday last, came out to New Zealand in the Lancashire Witch, a vessel ftvihich arrived in Lyttelton in October, i 1863. Previous to coming here, Mr Bennett was in the Royal Navy, and had seen active service in China, where he was ; stationed for about five years, and served [as ship's carpenter. On arriving in New jZealand.he took up the trade of building, iand followed that occupation for a few iyears in Christchurch. He afterwards nccepted a position to superintend the shipoment of'tnnber to be used in the eonstrucItionoTthaßakaia Bridge, all of which hadto _ef ended across Lake Ellesmere, from Little River to Leeston. Getting successfully through this task, ; he resumed Irasutes- in Leeston as a builder. About seven years ago, while doing a job chiljeeston, Mr Bennett fell a few feet off a, ladder — a slight accident, but one which was attended by most unfortunate results, inasmuch as it led to aneurism of one of jthe main arteries. He was not expected to-Burvrv_:his injuries for more than a few months, but he lived through three years of intense pain, during which time he was quite unable to move. After that he gradually got better, and was able to do a little light work. A few weeks ago, however, he caught a bad cold, and on Wednesday death ended a prolonged and , (painful illness. The deceased was a [ rprominent member of the Order of Oddlellows, Manchester Unity, into which he fwas initiated over-thirty years ago, ahd he : lalso belonged to the Masonic fraternity, j {He leaves a widow and a grown-up son . and- daughter. MR DANIEL SIMPSON. • ! Mr Daniel Simpson, an old colonist, died ivwy suddenly at his residence, Madras 1 [Street, yesterday morning. It appears ■that Mr Simpson, who was eighty-seven Iyears of age, had been ailing for some time : (with asthma, but* was able to go about. , (Yesterday morning he was in lm garden, pthenlie-fell back andimmediately expired. •Dr G. Deamer, who lives opposite, was 'called in, but could only pronounce life to jbe extinct. Mr Simpson came to the icolony in 1858 in the ship Nourmahal,and jlived at Port Chalmers for about thirty Ijears. With the late Mr J. Barnet, who ] jwas at the time Mayor of Dunedin, he -took 'the contract for building the first jetty at {Dunedin. About ten years ago he came to 'Canterbury, and has since that time lived on both the North Island and Cliristchurch. jHe was the father of Messrs George, 'Arthur and William Simpson, of this -city, and was a widower.
