SWIMMING.
♦— The annual swimming races of the Girls' High School were held yesterday at Corsair Bay. The weather was cool but pleasant, and about one hundred girls and their friends went down to Lyttelton by the 9.55 a.m. train. The races themselves were splendidly contested by numerous competitors and the finishes were for the most • part exciting. /The winners of the various events were Misses Muriel Oliivier, Elsie Eyanß, Nora Smythe, Ellen Menzies and /Nina Fraser. The form displayed was ; an improvement* on that shown in any former year, and great credit is due to the instructor, Mr W. Garrard. That gentleman also was responsible for the success of yesterday's sports. The holiday-maker3 returned to town by the 4.30 p.m. train. The annual swimming races in connection with the St Albans School were held in the school bath yesterday afternoon. The Chairman and several members of the committee, and a large number of visitors, were present, and great interest was taken in the proceedings. Chisnall 2 • The Old Boys' Eace will be held on Tuesday next at 5.30 p.m. Lane and Cavill, the Australian Bwimmers, have been on a visit to Timaru by invitation of the Timaru Bowing Club! On at the High School boys' swimming races, they gave an exhibition of their powers in the water, and yesterday atternoon Lane and Cavill undertook to reduce their salt water records for 100yds and 440yds respectively. Arrangements' were made representing a bath 2oyds long, "but these were such as to prevent more than a fraction of the large crowd that assembled from feeing the swimmers. Lane took the water first, and reduced his record from lmin Tfsecto lmin o^sec; and Cavill was 1 also successful, lowering his record from <_____. 24£sec to 6min 14isec. I
