Personal. — Colonel Pole-Pentbn and Captain Anderson were passengers by the Waikare to Lyttelton to-day. — Captain Lindsay, of the Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry, is at present in town. Display of Meat. — rhe Chriatchnrch Meat Company- draws attention to the fact that its Cashe'l and High Street shops will remain open to-night from six to nine o'clock with a. grand display of meat, which tha public is invited to inspect. Northern -"-too Sheep Fair. — The entries for the above, to be held at Rangiora on Tuesday next, are not coming tti • hand very rapidly. Up to to-day the Secretary had received about seventy as against over three huhdredlast year. The entries close to-morrow -with Mr A..S. Clarkson, Eangiora. A Ltttelton Swimmer. — Great satisfaction was expressed at Lyttelton to-day when it became known that H. Eich, the Lyttelton Swimming Club's representative at the Wanganui sports, had annexed the Quarter-milo New Zealand Championship. He established a New Zealand record for the distance, lowering the Association's standard by Bsec. Eiccarton - Licensing Committee. — A meeting of the Eiccarton Licensing Committee was held to-day ; present— Mr E. Beetham (chairman) and Messrs J. W. , Overton, C. Lewis, J. Jackson and H. Nunweek. The transfer of the West Melton Accommodation* House from Abraham Constable to Frederick Blogg wa% approved. Presentation.— Last Thursday evening, at the Sunnyside Asylum, Mr James , M'Cullough, painter attendant, on resign- • ing-_Qo.;the staff, was made the recipient of '& beautiful marble clock, suitably en? ,*. graved, aa a .token of the esteem for ; him entertained by his fellow employes, Head-attendant Newport, made the presentation, and Mr M'Cullough feelingly responded. Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association.-^ special rneebng of ?hJ Association will be held next Wednesday afternoon, to consider what steps D should be taken with reference to the irngation question. -An Unfounded Rumour— lt was persistently reported in town this morning that the steamer Talune had been wrecked off Sydney Heads. Inquiry at the local office of the Union Steamship Company, however, sets at rest all doubt as to the vessel's safety. She arrived at Sydney on Tuesday, and would not leave there again until to-morrow. Coal-Testino.— For nearly a month past a coal-testing train has been running daily over a measured distance on the north line. The locomotive has to draw about 130 tons of dead weight, and the coal, ash and water is accurately measured. Testerday an axle of one of the trucks broke when turning the sharp curve known as "The Devil's Corner," about a mile from Sefton. The line was damaged for a short distance, but the train was quickly pulled up. To clear the line for traffic, the truck was overturned beside the permanent way, land there was no delay to trains. Christian Endeavour Society. — A i group meeting of the North Canterbury i Christian Endeavour Societies was held at ' the Wesleyan Church, Rangiora, last evening. The attendance numbered about one hundred and thirty, Christchurch and suburban societies, -also Kaiapoi,, Southbrook, Rangiora and Loburn being represented. The Rev T. H. Lyon presided, and during the evening the Rev J. T. Burrows gave an address on " The Christian Endeavour Society as an Aggressive Force," and Mr H. ,' Thompson read a paper on " The Christian , Endeavourer as a Soul-winner." At the ' close "tit- the meeting, which throughout ' was of. an enthusiastic .character," . the ! Chairman thanked the local societies for ■•• tha'kmdreception accorded to thevisitors; \ and the R(_v- T.
