'. . BailiWat Excursions;— Considering t fke weather in the early morning, the railway/ excursions to Amberley and Little Elver Were very fairly patronised. Picnics. — The annual picnio in connection with the Girh' High School was held this morning, when one hundred and ten young ladies journeyed to Lyttelton by train. The following picnics take place tomorrow: — Southbrook School to Christchurch, Kaiapoi School to Papanui, Wai'iari School to Christchurch, 6-lentunnel School to Lyttelton, and East and West Oxford Schools to Christchnroh. A Challenge. —A correspondent invite 3 MrT. E.Taylor to resign his seat in the House of Representatives and seek reelection, and undertakes to pay the expenses of the contest if Mr Taylor should be successful. Ovcmkg. — The Linwood wheel j aces, to be held next Saturday at Lancaster Park, will bring together the fastest cycle riders in. New Zealand, and the Irish champion, H. Reynolds, will be present. There will be a. lantern parade to-night. Theatre Eotal. — The attendance at. the Theatre Eoyal last ni<jht afforded another proof of the 'popularity of a wellstaged and well-acted melodrama with Christchurch playgoers. The abundant incident, the quick transition from pathos to light merriment, and last but not least the excellence of the scenic effects told with the audience from start to finish. The Cotton King will be repeated to-night, and Straight from the Heart will be put on to-morrow evening. Miss Amy Sherwin. — After the conclusion of Miss Sherwin's concert last evening, tne Stanmore Band, under Bandmaster Foley, serenaded Miss Sherwin at Warner's Hotel, and played several pieces very nicely: Miss Sherwin came to the window and sang " Home, Sweet Home/ and for an encore " The Last Rose of Summer." Both song 3 ■were eagerly listened to by a large concourse of people, who had gathered in Cathedral Square. At the conclusion of the serenade she also sang a verse of " Xo, Sir." Salvation Abmt. — A large " crowd assembled at the Salvation Army Barracks la3t night to witness the continuation of the Harvest Festival meetings. The representations of sowing, reaping and stocking irere realistic, the effect being greatly enhanced by the colours thrown on the scene from a powerful limelight lantern operated by Mr Seager. Previous to the harvest scene-a"cake and jelly '* banquet was patronised by a large number. By special request tho harvest mum will be repeated to-night. The Horse Fiend. — A report was r< ceived in Christchurch this morning tha the horse fiend had been at his wor again at Dallington. On an investigate; being made, however, it was found tha nothing more serious had occurred thai an old cow sharpening her horns on he paddock-mate's ribs.
