The " Canterbury Times." — The illustrations in this week's issue of the Canterbury Times are of very great interest and variety and excellently executed. The cathedrals and churches series is,< continued, with views of St Matthew's Church, Dunedin, and portraits of the clergy of the church. Lady Ranfurly's garden party, the French warship Eure, which is visiting New Zealand, and the United States cruiser Maine, destroyed by a fearful explosion at Havana, are subjects of several pictures. Eeefton and its surroundings are illustrated, gold and coal-mining and the Midland railway works being this week's subjects. A Christchurch villa garden has | furnished two illustration, which show what beautiful effects can be produced, with skill, attention and material in a small space. Portraits of the chief participants in two recent weddings are given. Board of Education. — The election of members of the Board of Education has resulted in the return of Messrs C. A. C. Hardy, A. WSale of Property. — : Messrs Tonk3 Norton and Co. held a property sale at their rooms this afternoon, when a warehouse and land having a frontage of 50 links and a depth of 240 links was disposed •of. The warehouse, which is situated in Liehfield Street, is at present occupied by A. Tyree and Co., and was sold to 3lrs A. J. White at .£4BOO. Supreme Couht.— His Honor Mr Justice JDenniston held a sitting- in Baiito thia, coming. The case of Finlay and another v. Bishop and another was allowed to stand over till next Banco day, and the case of Gray r. Reynell, his Honor said, could be .mentioned in Chambers to-morrow. His Honor will hold a sitting in Chambers tomorrow, at 11 a.m., and on Friday morning he will leave for Hokitika. ; Band of Hope. — The Sydenham We33eyan Band of Hope meeting was held on Monday evening. There was a good attendance, and the Rev A. B. Chappell presided. Songs were contributed by Miss Puller and Mr Peek; recitations by Misses Ayers, Nellie Hunter and Mr T. Adnams j pianoforte selections by the Misses Bonnington, Lily Asquith and Mr Fred. Martin; and dialogues by the Dialogue Society. The Chairman delivered a suitable address. An Appeal to the Public. — The Chriatclmrch Beautifying Association is desirous of pushing, on as rapidly . as possible the planting of the Mill Island. and the river banks. To this end it is' anxious to receive contributions of bulbs and plants, few or many, as individuals may hare them to give. The things specially desired are daffodils, jonquils, narcissi, primroses and polyanthus. Parcels may be left with Mr Turner, seedsman, Colombo Street, or with the City Surveyor at the Council Offices. Sumner. — Merivale's A Hiisband in .Clover and Tom Taylor's Twenty Minutes with a Tiger were the pieces staged by the Sumner Amateur Dramatic Club last evening in aid of the public school picnic fund. Both plays went exceedingly well, and were reproduced in the excellent style usually adopted by, this club. Mrs Husey, as Lydia, and Mr F. E. Hyman, as Horace, acted A Husband -in Clover, filling their respective parts extremely well. An efficient orchestra, under the direction of Mr F. C. Raphael, contributed its share to the success of the entertainment, as also did the gramophone, kindly exhibited by Mr F. C. Raphael. The Tramway Company delayed the tram ixntilthe performance was over, for the convenience of the Christchurch visitors. Examination op Candidates.— ln the debate of the North Canterbury Education j Board this morning on the question of the inspection of Roman Catholic Schools, Nv ' R. Westenra quoted the following extract from the minutes of the Board of July 14, 1892: — "Standard Examinations. — A letter was received from the Secretary of the Education Department, asking if pupils at private schools who were candidates for appointments depending on their production of standard certificates might be allowed to attend at a public school on the day of examination for the purpose of being examined and obtaining certificates from the inspector. On the motion Of Mr Montgomery, seconded by Mr Adams, it was resolved to give the desired permission on the understanding that it will be allowed only to candidates for appointments in the Public Service." Theatre Royal.— Mr Bland Holt has scored a distinct success with his production of The Cotton King, at the Theatre Royal Last evening, when the second performance was given, the Theatre was un-, able to accommodate nil those who wished to witness the play, . By 7.30 notices were posted " Standing room only and before eicrht o'clock a number were turned away. From first to last the piece went splendidly, and the various fine sets were greeted with loud applause, as were the efforts of the principal actors. The comedy parts filled by Mr and Mrs Bland Holt caused hearty laughter, and the audience were sent away in hio-h good humour. The splendid orchestra under Mr Percy Kehoe contnbuted much to the enjoyment of the evening.
