The Government has accepted the tender of the Pennsylvania Steel Company, America, for the supply of 14,000 tons of steel rails and fish plates, aggregating .£75,000. Received March 8, 9.30 a.m. BAFFLED POLICE. SYDNEY, March 8. The police have received information i that the absconders Lee and Elliotb were not aboard the Aorangi on her arrival at Vancouver. They are supposed to have left her at Honolulu, and to be making their way to one of the South American Republics. A MINING EXCITEMENT. KALGOORLIE, Mabch 8. | Two miners were sent to prison for in- ] fringing the new alluvial mining regulations. Some hundreds of their. mates surrounded the railway carriage, and were only prevented from forcibly yescvpng the, prisoners by the firmness of the leaders. They afterwards hanged Mr Wittenoom, the Minister Of Mines, in effigy from a telegraph pole. A meeting decided to ignore the regulations and continue work. Feeling runs very high throughout the mining districts.
