Russia has peremptorily demanded certain railway concessions from China, the invasion of Manchuria being threatened in the event of a refusal. The steamer Fiado, from Sydney to New Caledonia, is long overdue, and it is feared that she has foundered. Her crew and passengers numbered thirty-four.
