The Mataura was a steel screw steamer of 5764 tons gross official tonnage, and was built by Barclay, Curie and Co., of Glasgow, in April, 1896. She was 421 ft long, 54ft 6in beam, and 29ft lin depth. She had triple expansion engines, with three cylinders of 30in, 49in and 78in diameter respectively, and 54in stroke. She was classed +100 Al 4/96. She was a cargo steamer, with first-class accommodation for twelve saloon passengers, and steerage accommodation which could be made available for five hundred passengers.

LIST OF OFFICERS. : The officers of the Mataura were:—Commander, C. A. Milward, R.N.R. ; chief officer, L. G. Silba; second officer, E. G. Terry- third, D: Maxwell: fourth, E. C. ! F. Slbon .;'obief engineer, P. Sutherland-; j second engineer, J. Thomas; third engineer, J. B.'Leech ; fburttj engineer, W. R; Sneddon; fifth engineer, J. Reid ; refrigerating engineer,- J. W. Forrester; second ditto, J.Scott; doctor, H. M. Page ; chief steward, F. Adcock. Mr Sjlba, the chief officer, will be remembered as having been captain of the ship Waipa and other vessels. PASSENGERS. The passengers who left Wellington by the Mataura were — Mrs A. J. Park, Miss Katie Park (sister-in-law of Captain Milward), and Mr T. Mill, of Dunedin (a medical student going Home to complete his course. He was a son of Mr John Mill, contractor for the New Zealand Shipping Company's stevedoring' at Port Chalmers, Oamaru and Timaru. Mr 3 Park is a sister-in-law of Mr Barns, of Kinsey. Barns and Co. s THE CARGO. . !•. The following is a summary of the cargo:; — 10,535 bales wool and skins, 480 casls tallow and pejts, 51 casks casings, 42 pk<£ bones, &c, 2830 pkgs cheese, 11 bales rabbit skins, 45 bales leather and basil:!, 1374 pkgs butter, 20,508 carcases mutton, 315 carcases lamb, 2733 cases rabbits, 90() cases meats, 16 sacks -grass seed, 1 baU horsehair, 213 packages sundries. - The vessel loaded at Wellington, Napier, Lyttelton, Port Chalmers and Bluff, and cargo was transhipped to her from Waitara. All the cargo shipped from Lyttelton was 632 cases of cheese. The Mataura left Wellington for London on Dec. 21 last. Information received by the New Zealand Shipping Company is to the effect that the steamer was wrecked at Selas Cove, southward of tbe entrance to the Strait. TPeb Press Association.!
