FIRES.
— : .• TPeb Press Association.! DUNEDIN, Jan. 6. ' An eight-roomed house at Sandymount, ' with nearly the whole of its contents, was destroyed by fire. The house, was owned and occupied by MrJohn M'Tavish, who was away from hom|| It is supposed that the cause of th,e fire*was a log rolling off the top of a colonial oven. The dwelling was insured for i>3oo, and the furniture, &c, for .£l5O, in the Standard Office.
Prohibition. — On Wednesday evening the Rev F. W. Isitt, representative of the New Zealand Alliance, lectured to an appreciative audience at the Gust Institute Hall. His subject was, "Don't Spare — Strike." Mr A. D. Hassail presided. At the close of the lecture a number of questions were asted and replied to. The Eev D. I). Rodger proposed, Mr F. G. Horrell seconded; and it was unanimously carried —"That Mr Isitt be heartily thanked for his able and eloquent deliverance, and that the meeting expresses its confidence in the recent reconstruction of the Alliance as being calculated to promote the best interests of the cause." As a result of Mr Isitt's' visit to the district, a number of .subscribers to the Alliance f«n«s have been secured.
