CYCLING.

foEAGUE OF NEW ZEALAND WHEELMEN. A meeting of the executive of the League of New Zealand Wheelmen was held in the Clarendon Hotel last evening ; present — Messrs W. E. Thompson (chairman), C. H. Cotton, A. R. Kirk, R. L. Adams, W. G. Atack, G. Milne, G. H. Lethaby and J. H. Tompkins. Permission was given to the Tnvercargill Amateur Cycling Club to hold a Married Men's Race and a Boys' Race without requiring the competitors to possess a license. Their application to appoint Mr A. E. Smith as local consul for the League was held over till next meeting, as the other club in Invercargill had also forwarded a nominee for the position. The Auckland Cycling Club announced its suspension of a rider who had been guilty of misbehaviour at a race meeting at Coromandel, and it was decided to ask for full particulars regarding the case. Permits to hold races under the League were granted as follows :-^-Southland Caledonian Society, Jan. 1 ; New Plymouth Sports Association, Feb. 3 ; Wairarapa Caledonian Society, Jan. 3; Auckland Eight Hours League, Jan. 8 ; Auckland Caledonian Society, Jan 1; Christchurch Cycling Club, Dec. 25. The Chairman said that arrangements had been made for the invitation of all visiting cyclists to the conference to be held on Friday night. Mr Milne asked what truth there was in a statement, which had been published, to the effect that a Christchurch gentleman had agreed to give =£100 to the League for the purpose of instituting a New Zealand Brassard. They had not heard of the offer officially. Mr Cotton said that the offer was a bond fide one, and had been made by a gentleman of standing in the town, who was thoroughly capable of carrying it out, but did not at present wish to divulge his name. The conditions accompanying the offer were that the League should not depart from its present principles regarding the government of amateur sport, and that the race should bear the donor's name. . The election of a League consul for Dunedin was held over. CYCLISTS' ALLIANCE. The weekly meeting of the the Executive Committee of the New Zealand Cyclists' Alliance was held at the Secretary's office last night. Correspondence wag read— From the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, asking why an application by Mr Hobbs for reinstatement had been delayed. The Secretary reported that he had only just discovered the letter from the Waikato Club in reference to the matter amongst the papers handed over by the late Secretary. The Executive decided that Mr Hobbs had not broken his amateur status, an.d,tbe Secretary was instructed to return his fee on application. A letter was received from the Wanganui Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club, naming Thursday and Friday, Feb. 10 and 11, as the mo3t suitable days for tho championship meeting there. The Secretary was instructed to see Mr Chignall, delegate for the Wanganui Club, and obtain the letter which the Club had written to him asking for permission to hold a meeting. Mr S. B. Kalaugher, of Seadown, Temuka, wrote asking whether sports promoters could insist on a rider starting on the inside edge of the track instead of on the banking. The Committee considered the question one which should be decided by the referee. Letters were received from two riders recently disqualified by the Alliance asking for reconsideration of their cases. The Executive decided that the applicants should be informed that no action would be taken. Permits were granted to the Patea Amateur Association to hold three cycling events at their sports on Boxing Day. The Secretary reported that he had seen Messrs Peterson and Co. regarding a new design for championship medals. The Executive approved the design which was submitted.
