POLITICAL NOTES.
[From Our Correspondent.] WELLINGTON, Dec. 9. RAILWAY BETWEEN SHEFFIELD AND CANTERBURY COLLIERY. Messrs Wason, Tanner and Meredith brought under the notice of the Premier and Sir Hall- Jones to-night the advisability of tho construction of .about one mile of railway, to connect the Canterbury Colliery with Sheffield. The estimated cost.of the work was stated to be .£2OOO at the utmost, and it was pointed out that the owners of the colliery were prepared to pay _S0 per annum as rent. This, it was contended, would pay interest on the cost of construction. The Premier promised to bring the [ matter before Ministers when dealing with the Public Works Statement. OLD AGE PENSIONS. It is said to-night that twenty members of the Council are pledged to support the laying aside amendment, and this only leaves nineteen votes for the Bill.
