OFFICIAL VISITORS.
The following' reply to the petition of various local political bodies, that women official visitors to gaols should be endowed with the powers of Justices of tho Peace, has been received from the Premier :— Premier's office, Wellington, Dec. 3, 1897. Mrs Ada Wells, president Canterbury Women's institute,— Madam,— Tho Premier has directed me to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of Nov. 23, which also bears the signatures of Mesdames Fletcher, Eobison, Bone, Sheppard and Cole, as well as the President of the Progressive Liberal Association, asking that women official visitors to gaols may be endowed with the powers of Justices of the Peaco in their official capacity, and to say the matter, shall receive consideration. I am to add, however, that lief ore the request could be granted the law would require to be amended. — Yours obediently, Alex. Willis.
